Colt's Cult Classics - April 2018

It's that time of the month! It's time for a new batch of movies for my ongoing series on It's Relevant TV, "Colt's Cult Classics."

Here they are:

Men In Black (1997) - Here come the Men In Black! Well, at least the first time they showed up in the movie franchise. One of Will Smith's first big blockbuster movies, it also stars the always incredible Tommy Lee Jones. They are supported by a great cast including Linda Fiorentino, Vincent D'Onofrio, Rip Torn, Tony Shalhoub, and David Cross. This flick is a great, funny sci-fi movie that is definitely worth watching. The sequels are pretty good, but nothing beats the original.

Hunt For The Red October (1990) - Before Harrison Ford (and now Jim from The Office) was Jack Ryan, Alec Baldwin held this role. This movie based off of a Tom Clancy novel has a great cast, great music, and is a good Cold War flick about stealing a submarine and defecting to the west. This movie has a stellar cast with a late in his prime Sean Connery, my personal favorite Scott Glenn, the always good James Earl Jones, and a strong performance by Sam Neill. Supporting them is Tim Curry (who starred in The Shadow with Alec Baldwin) and a very young Stellan Skarsgård.

Weekend at Bernie's (1989) - This movie is a cult classic that was so successful; it actually spawned a weird sequel that a brought back the original cast. It's just a simple story about two guys, invited to their boss's house for the weekend, only to find that he is dead. It is an inspiring story of "Fake It Until You Make It." It stars Andrew McCarthy and Jonathan Silverman with Terry Kiser as Bernie.

The Shadow (1994) - Before there were big budget superhero movies, there were moderately budgeted superhero movies. Alec Baldwin stars in the movie along with John Lone, Penelope Ann Miller, Ian McKellen, Jonathan Winters, Peter Boyle, and Tim Curry. Fun fact: Tim Curry was in another movie with Alec Baldwin, "Hunt for the Red October." It is a very enjoyable movie with some pretty funny moments in it. The music score by Jerry Goldsmith is also pretty good.

Sneakers (1992) - This is a great movie with an ALL-STAR cast including Robert Redford, Dan Aykroyd, Ben Kingsley, Mary McDonnell, River Phoenix, Sidney Poitier and David Strathairn. It takes you into the world of secrets and hacking, or at least the 1992 version of hacking. Although somewhat dated in terms of the technology shown in the movie, it holds up very well in today's world. It is worth a watch for sure.

Heartbreak Ridge (1986) - This Clint Eastwood movie from the mid-1980's is one of his earlier works telling stories from the perspective of the U.S. Military. Starring and directed by good ole Clint, it is an enjoyable movie set against the background of the invasion of Grenada. Plus Mario Van Peebles is in it.
